Dug-Outs - Primitive Hut
I had the opportunity to assist in the realisation of a project by architect Wim Cuyvers on a site near the MASEREEL grounds. The installation, Dug-Outs - Primitive Hut, is a wooden structure built from pine trees that were felled as part of sustainable forest management on the MASEREEL site. The roof is covered with reclaimed slate tiles from recently demolished artist residences.
The structure consists of two rows of six seating benches, separated by partitions and covered by a sloping roof, creating twelve framed viewpoints and distinct spatial experiences. The use of untreated, unplaned, non-tropical wood intentionally contrasts with industrial urban furniture, allowing natural ageing and weathering to become part of the project.
During the construction, I assisted in securing the final structural beams and installing the slate roof.
