Bikebecue
This intermediate assignment focused on designing a piece of furniture linked to a specific location within the Malem neighbourhood in Ghent. Since Malem is primarily experienced by us as a place we pass through by bicycle, we chose to design a mobile object connected to cycling.
The project transforms two bicycles into a temporary piece of public furniture. Custom-made wooden panels are integrated into the frames of the bicycles and can be unfolded when the bikes are parked next to each other. The panels interlock, stabilising the bicycles and creating a shared table surface that can accommodate a small barbecue.
The design explores how everyday mobility objects can temporarily transform into social infrastructure. It allows cyclists to create spontaneous meeting moments in public space, while remaining lightweight, flexible, and easy to fold back into transport mode.
